PULSE 2/24/2010 -- A word from Tim Raducha Grace

SPECIAL GUEST ENTRY! -- Tim Raducha Grace

For the past few months, IBM Systems Lab Services IT Optimization Consulting Team and IBM Software Group have been working together on two efforts 1) a cost allocation and revenue optimization approach and 2) a Systems and Service Management TCO to help organizations understand and reduce IT costs. This approach can help organizations free up valuable IT resources to improve service levels. Today, Tom Recchia and I presented these approaches at PULSE. We first highlighted the challenge that IT organizations are expected to do more with fewer resources. Indeed, many 2010 IT budgets are at 2005 levels. We highlighted a three step service management and financial process to help organizations understand and reduce costs. We then provided a series of real life examples of how organizations can leverage these core financial management practices to understand and reduce costs.

Many organizations are making decisions to cut IT spending (or invest the little they have with little or no insight into whether they're making cuts in the right areas. Unfortunately, almost 66% of CFOs and CIOs do not know the size of their core IT assets and 33% of organizations do not know what they spend on IT assets each year.

The feedback from clients and others was very positive. Many of them are interested in approaches such as the one we presented to use service management and financial management to understand and lower costs. Clients were especially focused and interest in the integrated hardware, systems software and service management approach to help optimize costs and free up resources for new investments. I think it highlights a key value IBM can provide to clients, in that it can provide them with an integrated solution to not only lower costs, but also improve service.

BOOK
Business of IT, The: How to Improve Service and Lower Costs

by Robert Ryan (Author), Tim Raducha-Grace (Author)
Available in e-Pub (Kindle Edition) and Paperback

IT organizations have achieved outstanding technological maturity, but many have been slower to adopt world-class business practices. This book provides IT and business executives with methods to achieve greater business discipline throughout IT, collaborate more effectively, sharpen focus on the customer, and drive greater value from IT investment. The book focuses on four specific areas of business practices related to improving IT service management, managing services’ cost and value, measuring IT performance with a goal of improving service and lowering cost, and improving customer alignment. Drawing on their experience consulting with leading IT organizations, Robert Ryan and Tim Raducha-Grace help IT leaders make sense of alternative ways to improve IT service and lower cost, including ITIL, IT financial management, balanced scorecards, and business cases. You’ll learn how to choose the best approaches to improve IT business practices for your environment and use these practices to improve service quality, reduce costs, and drive top-line revenue growth.
